Can’t I create my own reality? What about self-will? Aren’t I in charge?
These are all common questions of spiritual seekers. The way the inquiry is addressed depends on the context. Of course, from the relative point of view, there is cause and effect. One takes an action, there is an outcome. It appears we have a separate free will.
However, some of us are determined seekers, digging further into the nature of reality, the Unfolding Now, which is determined by an infinite number of causes and effects occurring simultaneously in this exact moment, here and now. When we settle into and as that Absolute Presence, which is unmoving and unchanging, the non-existence of a separate actor is realized.
In this clip — a short conversation with a seeker who has kindly given permission to share — I offer a simple exercise to inquire into the nature of free will. Together, we look: Who is the doer of the action, after all? Am I in control? Have I ever been entirely responsible for the outcome of “my” actions?
